William Powel, III
Senior Vice President, Legal Services
William (Bill) Powel serves as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Summa Health System and is responsible for legal services, risk management, insurance and compliance.
After graduating from Stanford University in 1979, Powel taught French at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts before attending law school at Washington & Lee University where he earned his Juris Doctor. He earned a master’s degree in health law from Loyola University in Chicago and was an associate and partner in the Chicago law firm of Martin, Craig, Chester & Sonnenshein.
In 1991, he moved to Cleveland and was assistant general counsel and assistant secretary for seven years at University Hospitals Health System. He has lectured for the Cleveland Bar Association (where he chaired the Health Law Section) and the Society of Ohio Hospital Attorneys where he served on the board for three terms.
