Justin Wigington, an active, outdoors-loving young adult, was in a horrific car accident one night in March 2012 only three minutes from home. He was ejected from his car and experienced a traumatic spine vertebrae injury. His spine was severely broken — the worst type of spine injury that could happen to someone.
Thanks to a quick response from police and fire, Justin was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital's Level 1 Trauma Center where emergency room physicians worked quickly to get imaging of Justin to assess his full condition. Dr. Scot Miller, orthopaedic spine surgeon with Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, performed a spinal fusion to correct Justin’s broken vertebrae.
Dr. Miller's prognosis for Justin wasn't good. But his mom never shared with Justin what his slim chance would be to walk again.
Justin spent three weeks in Summa Akron City Hospital's ICU, then two months in rehab facilities. A month later, he took his first steps and was walking on his own within a few months of the accident.
