About Us

Accreditations

Summa Health System believes patient engagement is critical to optimizing outcomes. Essentially, the more you know, the more productive the discussions you have with your physician and other healthcare providers will be and the better decisions you can make about your health.

Hospitals strive to be accredited by highly-regarded, respected third party healthcare-related organizations to demonstrate their commitment to providing the best quality care. These groups set strict, disciplined standards for that quality and those best practices they provide important data for evaluating the state of a healthcare system as well.

Summa Health System is accredited by the following:

The Joint Commission
This organization reviews and accredits Summa Health System Hospitals (Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals, Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital).

The Joint Commission has a longstanding commitment to providing meaningful information about the comparative performance of accredited organizations to the public. This commitment is fulfilled through the provision of organization-specific Quality Reports on Quality Check.

American Osteopathic Association
This organization reviews and accredits Summa Western Reserve Hospital.

The American Osteopathic Association's Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) has been providing medical facilities with an objective review of their services since 1945. The program, which has also been accrediting healthcare facilities for more than 30 years under Medicare, is recognized nationally by the federal government, state governments, insurance carriers and managed care organizations.

The program originally began as a way to assure that osteopathic students received their training in facilities providing a high quality of patient care. It is a cost effective, user-friendly means to validate the quality of care provided by a facility.

American College of Surgeons
This organization reviews and accredits Summa Health System Hospitals (Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals, Summa Barberton Hospital and Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital) in Cancer and Trauma services.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.

The college is dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and to safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment.

NCQA
This organization reviews and measures quality for SummaCare.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) measures more than 47 quality standards that directly affect consumers -including quality improvement practices and member’s rights and responsibilities.
