Bariatric Surgery and Medical Weight Loss
Obesity is now ranked as the second-highest cause of preventable deaths in the country with approximately 300,000 people dying each year from obesity-related illnesses such as:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Body mass index (BMI) is used as a guide for obesity. As a patient’s body mass index (BMI) rises, the severity of these obesity-related illnesses increases. The degree to which these conditions become life threatening is directly proportional to a patient’s BMI.
After a significant weight loss, patients may see a dramatic improvement in these conditions and in some cases may even find they have been cured of the condition. They can also reduce or eliminate many medications or even sleep without the need for a breathing machine.
While diet and exercise have been consistently shown to result in weight loss, 90%-95% regain the lost weight within 1-2 years. Compared to these results, weight loss surgery has been shown to be most effective in helping people maintain significant weight loss.
