Akron, Ohio, Jan. 30, 2007 – Summa Health System today announced that Dr. Santosh Potdar has joined its Transplant Center as the new transplant director. Building on the center’s record number of kidney transplants in 2006 and its 40th anniversary this year, Dr. Potdar is aiming for even more growth in the future. |
In a continued effort to provide the highest quality and most personalized patient care available, Dr. Potdar plans to expand the number of outreach clinics to better meet the needs of patients outside of the Akron area.
With a location already in Youngstown, Summa’s outreach clinics will offer complete pre- and post-surgery care, including lab work, education and testing. Staffed by physicians and transplant coordinators, the additional clinics will provide another easy and convenient option for patients. The new outreach clinics will not impact patient services or surgery offered at Akron City Hospital.
Dr. Potdar also brings extensive experience in using minimum anti-rejection medication, a new post-transplant immunosuppressant therapy. This cutting-edge treatment decreases the number of side effects and complications experienced from a high dosage of anti-rejection medications while maintaining a successful outcome.
“I am very pleased to join the Summa family and look forward to growing the transplant center in many positive directions,” said Dr. Potdar. “It’s wonderful to be a part of a reputable and comprehensive transplant program like Summa’s, which has always maintained a focus on quality care and positive patient experiences.”
Most recently, Dr. Potdar was the director of kidney transplant at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes Barre, Pa. He also held the titles of head and director of transplantation and liver surgery as well as director of pancreas and kidney transplant at Geisinger. Previously he was director of pancreas at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Potdar is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and fellowship trained in multi-organ, liver, pancreas and kidney transplant surgery at Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
