When an older adult is hospitalized, they often face challenges other patients may not face. Summa Health System’s Acute Care for Elders Unit (ACE) is a nationally recognized, state-of-the-art care model to improve hospital care for older adults. The ACE unit integrates every aspect of care needed to make sure patients are getting the specialized care they deserve.
The ACE Unit is specifically designed to help patients maintain function and maximize the independence during hospitalization for acute illnesses such as pneumonia or heart failure. The ACE unit’s home-like atmosphere features carpeted patient rooms with artwork, curtains and lighting designed especially for older adults. Communal areas encourage patients to interact with family, friends and hospital staff, which restores confidence and eases the transition from hospital to home. The ACE unit is supported by an interdisciplinary team, including a
geriatrician, geriatric certified advanced practice nurse, therapists, geriatric certified pharmacist, dietitian and a social worker. Summa’s ACE Unit offers an innovative approach to care which is unique in the Akron area.
