Summa Akron City Hospital is accredited as a Mission Lifeline STEMI receiving center and has been re-accredited as a Chest Pain Center with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), which is a mechanical means of treating heart attack patients by eliminating blockages in coronary arteries. These accreditations bring the total number of Chest Pain Centers to three within Summa Health System.

On average, Summa stops heart attacks 26 minutes faster than the national standard.  In fact, Summa Health System includes the only hospital in Akron or Cleveland to earn AHA designation as a Mission Lifeline Heart Attack Receiving Center.*

The American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association has recognized Summa Akron City and Summa St. Thomas Hospitals as Gold Achievement hospitals for successfully implementing a higher standard of care for heart failure patients through the Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure quality improvement program. AHA recognized the hospitals for following treatment guidelines in certain key measures at least 85% of the time in an effort to improve quality of care and outcomes for heart failure patients, and maintaining this performance level for two or more consecutive years.
