EMS and Paramedic Program

The role of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has evolved exponentially. Advances in medicine and technology increase the role of our local area EMS providers. Recognizing the vital role EMS plays in lives of our most vulnerable patients, Summa Health System strives to achieve optimum patient care through the advancement of emergency medical protocols, technological upgrades and training. Initial requirements to participate in Summa Health System’s Paramedic/EMS Program:

  • Minimum age - 18 Years of Age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • State of Ohio or National Registry EMT-Basic Certification
  • Valid AHA CPR Provider Certification
  • Completed Application
  • Education Program

Summa Saint Thomas Hospital Paramedic Education Program is a ten-month program beginning each January through October.

Class Times:
The classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Additional classes are held every Thursday evening for the first four months. Twelve hours of clinical experience are required each week, bringing the total time commitment for the program to approximately thirty hours per week.

Program Discription:
Students spend 8-12 hours each week in lecture and skill sessions and 8-12 hours per week in the clinical area. The program requires 830 hours of commitment. The schedule includes some full or partial Saturdays classes throughout the school year and approximately eight day commitments. Total hours may vary for each student based upon clinical competencies. In addition, a concentrated A&P computer self-study program must be completed prior to the completion of the program.

Tuition:
The tuition for the program is $4,300.00 (including study materials), payable the first night of class at the start of each of trimester (January, May and August). Included in the tuition fee: basic trauma life support course, fee for provision by Akron Children’s Hospital for educational classes, and PALS course. The State/National Registry examination fees are NOT included in the tuition.

Pre-Entrance Exam:
The pre-entrance testing date for the next paramedic class is yet to be determined. Application, fee and documents must be received in our office or postmarked by our pre-set dates. Download the 2011 Application.
