Hand Surgery
Because you use your hands for countless activities every day, problems in the muscles, bones or joints of the hand, wrist or arm can seriously affect your quality of life. Some patients damage their hands playing sports or working. Others suffer from arthritis or congenital problems. Whatever the cause, Summa Orthopaedic hand specialists offer comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of upper extremity ailments. We treat carpal tunnel, trigger finger, tendonitis, De Quervain’s disease, Dupuytren’s disease and more.
Foot and Ankle Surgery
Almost everyone will eventually experience foot and/or ankle problems. While some ailments are congenital, most stem from poorly fitted shoes or waiting too long to see a physician. Whatever the cause, Summa Orthopaedics can help with comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of conditions related to back problems, flat feet, neuromas, diabetes, arthritis, clawtoes, mallet toes, hammertoes and more.
Joint Replacement
For patients facing hip or knee replacements, Summa offers special pre-surgery classes to help prepare them for surgery and rehabilitation. These include in-home instruction on the types of medical products they’ll need after surgery. During rehabilitation, they attend classes with other orthopaedic patients under the guidance of a physical therapist and a nurse.
Orthopaedic Oncology
Summa Orthopaedics offers an unsurpassed team approach and comprehensive treatment for patients with benign or malignant tumors of the bone and surrounding tissue. In preoperative planning, orthopaedic oncologists work closely with pathologists and radiologists to precisely locate and define tumor characteristics. When necessary, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists are available to assist in treatment. Physical and occupational therapists, plastic surgeons and physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, as well as other specialists, may also team up to complete the recovery process.
Scott D. Weiner, M.D., Director, Basic Science Resident Education, lectures worldwide on limb salvage and orthopaedic oncology. Listed as one of Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors, he is one of only a few Ohio orthopaedists who focus solely on orthopaedic oncology. As a result, he and Summa’s staff offer patients state-of-the-art technology on even the most complex curative surgeries and reconstructions. Those surgeries enjoy outcomes equal to or better than the national average.
Shoulder Surgery
Arthritis, bursitis, fractures, rotator cuff tears, dislocations and other shoulder problems make up almost 20% of all doctor visits. Summa Orthopaedic shoulder specialists offer a wide range of shoulder care, from arthroscopic surgery to total joint replacements to rehabilitation. We employ the very latest MRI and high-speed CT diagnostic tools to correctly pinpoint problems, and our orthopaedic surgeons are nationally recognized in their subspecialties. In fact, Summa Orthopaedics has consistently earned a ranking on U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list since 1997.
Spine Surgery
Spine patients receive specialized care at the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, a facility dedicated to the full continuum of orthopaedic care. Spine services, including post-surgical rehabilitation, are delivered on a floor wholly dedicated to spine patients, with a staff specially trained to address their unique needs. In fact, two of our spine surgeons have earned the prestigious Volvo Award in recognition of their achievement in medical research and advancement.
Summa spine surgeons routinely employ the most advanced techniques. In fact, ours was one of 25 centers in the country that participated in a pivotal study to determine the long-term benefits of the use of BMP during spinal fusion, which eliminates the painful harvesting of a patient’s own bone for grafting.
Using the very latest minimally invasive techniques where possible, Summa offers surgical repair of herniated or damaged discs, disc removal and fusion, artificial disc replacement, treatment for scoliosis and more.
Trauma
Summa Orthopaedics specializes in difficult fractures and bone grafts. Our fellowship-trained surgeons treat hip socket injuries, bone infections and complex long-bone fractures, as well as fractures that are slow to heal. They can even lengthen bones by gradually filling in missing bone.
