Summa’s innovative treatment services encompass today’s most serious medical conditions. We invest nearly $10 million annually in research support for many areas including cardiology, cancer and geriatrics. Major research programs are supported by grants from institutions such as National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
Summa Health's Specialties
The Bariatric Care Center offers a comprehensive approach to weight loss. Our program includes medical (nonsurgical) and minimally invasive surgical components. The Center is modeled after the standards of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) and Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) and has been an American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery(ASMBS) Center of Excellence since 2007.
Summa’s Cancer Centers combine the latest cancer treatment technology, medical specialists and personalized, patient-centered care to create an environment focused on whole-person healing. At Summa, you have access to advanced, comprehensive cancer services across a number of convenient centers located in Northeast Ohio in Summit, Portage and Medina counties.
Summa’s Cardiovascular Institute is nationally-recognized for providing compassionate, patient-centered care. The multidisciplinary team is comprised of more than 50 cardiologists, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons and is complemented by national and international clinical trials for the treatment and prevention of heart disease.
Summa’s Institute for Seniors and Post Acute Care is nationally-acclaimed for its model of care for seniors at every level of care, allowing older adults to remain independent as long as possible. We offer an integrated approach that enhances quality of care, access to services and outcomes for older adult patients and for those patients with complex illnesses.
The Trauma Center at Summa Health System is comprised of highly skilled emergency department physician teams, providing the highest quality care available. Summa Akron City Hospital is verified as a Level I trauma center since 1998 and is also a Certified Chest Pain Center and Certified Stroke Center.
Summa’s Orthopaedic services are renowned for innovation and excellence for the treatment of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system including total joint, spine, knee, ankle and rotator. In 2009, Summa and Crystal Clinic Orthopedics partnered and heightened the attention of two nationally recognized service offerings.
Our Sports Medicine specialists employ a team approach to sports medicine services, ensuring athletes are involved with education, injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
Summa’s Surgical Services department offers minimally invasive surgical techniques including cutting-edge technology and programs such as robotic-assisted surgery, a Telemedical Center, bariatric surgery and bloodless surgery. More than 47,100 outpatient and inpatient surgeries are performed per year among our network of eight hospitals and many outpatient centers.
Summa’s Extensive Women’s Health Services include Pelvic Pain Specialty Center, Urogynecological/Incontinence Care and the Institute for Minimally Invasive Therapeutics as well as a nationally published research agenda. In addition, obstetrics care has also been nationally recognized for quality.
