Cognitive Disorders

Cognitive disorders refer to the many mental processes that are the foundation of rational thinking and range from the minor cognitive declines that affect many people as they age to more serious cognitive issues such as delirium, dementia, and Alzheimers disease. The American College of Physicians estimates that mild cognitive impairment affects about 20 percent of Americans who are over the age of seventy. Mild cognitive impairment is the stage between normal forgetfulness due to aging and the development of dementia; mild problems dont interfere with everyday activities, andpersons are often aware of the forgetfulness. Most of these individuals will remain stable, but some may develop more serious cognitive disorders. Evaluation through Summas Geriatric Treatment Services will assist in determining the degree of cognitive decline.
