In order to diagnose an anxiety disorder, the behavior health specialist will usually begin an evaluation with questions about medical history to help determine whether there is a physical illness causing the symptoms. If no physical illness is present, behavioral health professionals will utilize various interview and assessment tools to evaluate whether an anxiety disorder is present.
Treatment depends upon the type of disorder but will usually include a combination of the following:
- medications (anti-depressants and/or anxiety-reducing drugs)
- psychotherapy to help the patient develop methods to understand and cope with the disorder
- cognitive behavioral therapy that will help patients learn to recognize and change behavior and thoughts that lead to problematic feelings
- lifestyle changes and relaxation therapy
