What is the treatment for delirium?
A complete assessmentincludes a neurologic and medical examination, various psychological studies and review ofcognitive and motor function. Various laboratory and radiologic tests may also be performed to isolate the diagnosis.
The goal of treatment is to control or reverse the cause of the symptoms. Treatment depends on the condition causing delirium. Stopping or changing medications that worsen confusion, or that are not necessary, may improve mental function. Behavioral modification may be needed to control unacceptable or dangerous behaviors, with reality orientation to reduce disorientation.
Delirium often lasts only about a week, although it may take several weeks for mental function to return to normal levels. Full recovery is common.
