Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB)

The LAGB provides long-term treatment for severe obesity. A flexible silicone elastic ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach creating a new small pouch and leaves the larger part of the stomach below the band so the food storage area is reduced. The new small pouch can hold only a small amount of food which:

  • creates a feeling of fullness
  • limits the amount of food the stomach can hold
  • slows down the passage of food

"The lap-band procedure is an exciting option for patients choosing weight loss surgery because it is adjustable and does not require a complete bypass of the stomach." said John Zografakis, M.D. Medical Director, Summa's Bariatric Care Center. "The procedure enables surgeons to control the rate of the patients weight loss by adjusting the band post-surgery."

After the LAGB procedure, patients are monitored closely. If they are not losing weight, the band can be tightened. Equally, it can be loosened to allow more food, if necessary through a port under the skin. There is no permanent change to a persons anatomy and food digestion occurs through the normal process, allowing nutrients and vitamins from food to be fully absorbed into the body.

In most cases, this procedure is performed through laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique that is relatively gentle on the body and allows for a faster recovery.
