AKRON, Ohio, April 13, 2011-You can do a lot with your phone these days : surf the Internet, download games and even keep tabs on what’s normal during your pregnancy. Summa Health System launched a text messaging service today that delivers weekly health-related messages to pregnant women based on their due date and stage of pregnancy.

“The idea is to help women understand more about their baby’s growth and development and what they should be expecting along the way,” said Jennifer Doyle, RN, maternal outreach education coordinator at Summa. “Pregnancy is a very exciting time, and it can be reassuring to know that the way your body is changing is normal, and if there are problems, find tips for coping along the way.”

The brief texts span numerous topics including the woman’s health and well-being, baby development and how to plan for delivery and motherhood. There are insightful tips about dealing with morning sickness, avoiding heartburn while pregnant, and managing diabetes and other chronic conditions.

“We picked text messages because we thought it would be the best way to educate today’s pregnant women who are always on the go,” Doyle said. “The messages are relevant, helpful and delivered in the palm of their hand. I think women who sign up will really look forward to their weekly message.”

Women can access additional information on a subject by clicking through the message and can even e-mail the expanded content to a friend.

To sign up for the service, text SUMMABABY to 53016, and follow the instructions provided. Texts are sent every Tuesday. Women who sign up by Mother’s Day, May 8, will be entered to win a 32 GB iPhone 4 valued at $745.
