On World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, the public is encouraged to visit the Metro Transit Center in Akron where they can receive free, confidential HIV screenings and educational information provided by Summa Akron City Hospital, Summit County Public Health, Violet’s Cupboard, Ryan White Collaborative, East Akron Community House and Native American Indian and Veterans Center, Inc. World AIDS Day was established to raise awareness of the global epidemic and encourage people to be tested.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than one million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS; but one in five Americans do not know they are infected. In order to reinforce the importance of early detection and treatment, the CDC updated its guidelines in 2006 to include HIV testing as part of every individual’s routine healthcare. There are an estimated 33 million people living with HIV worldwide.
