UNIONTOWN, Ohio, Sept. 20, 2011 – Those driving on Massillon Road in Uniontown are about to notice the next visible phase of construction on Summa Health System’s 24-hour emergency department. The seven-hospital health system based in Akron will begin raising steel beams for its new facility in October, located just off I-77 at the corner of Boettler and Massillon roads and across the street from the Summa Health Center at Green.
The planned $17 million, 22,000-square-foot emergency department will be staffed by emergency medicine physicians board-certified in adult and pediatric emergencies who will begin treating patients in June. The facility will include 14 exam rooms, two resuscitation rooms and state-of-the art imaging. The Summa Emergency Department is expected to create 50 new jobs.
“Our goal is to provide convenient, quality healthcare for patients in Uniontown, Green and surrounding communities,” said Unhee Kim, RN, MBA, Summa's system vice president of service lines and ancillary services. “We are pleased to provide this service as an extension of our outpatient services offered in the Summa Health Center at Green across the street.”
The Summa Health Center at Green is an $11.2 million, 100,000-square-foot center that opened in 2000 and adjoins with the Green Family YMCA. The center currently provides community access to a wide range of services including MRI, CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound, bone densitometry, mammography, sleep medicine, lab services, sports health and rehabilitation services.
Adding an emergency department to the campus is part of a plan Summa unveiled in March 2010 to grow its comprehensive emergency services network by building two new, full-service emergency departments and expanding three of its existing emergency departments. Across the system, Summa’s five existing emergency departments saw more than 226,328 patients in 2010.
