AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 10, 2011 – The sleep lab at the Summa Health Center at White Pond recently teamed up with Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) to train students studying to become polysomnographic technologists, or sleep technicians. Tri-C’s polysomnography program, combined with the training partnership at Summa, is the only program of its kind in Northeast Ohio.
The training program, which began this academic year, allows students to work with an experienced Summa sleep technician who will teach them how to conduct and monitor a sleep study that helps diagnose potential sleep disorders. The students are given the opportunity to use testing equipment, perform diagnostic procedures and work with and inform the patient about their sleep study one-on-one.
Hannah Butcher, a sleep technician with Summa, is a mentor to Justin Lucas, the first student from Tri-C’s polysomnography program to participate in the training partnership. Lucas trains with Butcher two nights per week from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m.
“I think it’s wonderful that we can help bring what the students are learning in the classroom to life,” Butcher said. “I find it very rewarding to teach students in a hands-on environment and show them what I love about the field.”
Lucas, who is a student at Tri-C’s Western Campus in Parma, went through a background check, application and interview process before he was selected to train at Summa. He will graduate in May 2012 after one year in the program.
“The training allows me to have a real-world clinical experience that relates exactly to what we are studying in class,” Lucas said. “The experience I’m having with patient care at Summa is invaluable, and working with Hannah also provides me with a different perspective on the field.”
The fall semester training program between Summa and Tri-C began the week of September 12 and will finish the week of December 9.
