AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 15, 2011The paint is dry, the beds are in place, and the new equipment is ready for use. Physicians and staff are now ready to care for you around-the-clock at the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina Emergency Department, which opened Wednesday.

The community can now utilize Summa Health System’s first free-standing, 24-hour emergency department, located at 3780 Medina Road in Medina and Montville Townships.

“We are very excited to bring Summa’s emergency care services to Medina County and to provide an efficient and comfortable experience for patients and their families,” said Kevin Klauer, D.O., medical director of the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina Emergency Department. “Our innovative approach to patient-centered care allows patients to be checked in and moved to a bed to be treated as quickly as possible, and for families and visitors to sit alongside them at the bedside.”

The Summa Health Center at Lake Medina is a 100,000-square-foot center that opened in 2010. The center provides a wide range of services including medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology; outpatient surgery; sleep lab; physical and occupational therapy; lab services; pulmonary medicine; imaging services; family medicine; obstetrics/gynecology; cardiovascular medicine; behavioral health and pain management. The health center’s laboratory and imaging services adjoin the emergency department, providing accessibility and efficiency.

Adding an emergency department to the health center is part of a plan Summa announced in March 2010 to grow its comprehensive emergency services network by building two new, full-service emergency departments and expanding three of its existing emergency departments. Across the system, Summa’s five existing emergency departments saw more than 226,328 patients in 2010. Summa’s other free-standing emergency department is under construction in Green and is expected to open in June.

Patients and their families may request to come to the emergency department from any ambulance squad in the Medina area. In the event that a transfer to another facility is needed, the physician, patient and family will decide the next appropriate location for the patient’s care.

The $8 million, 20,000-square-foot emergency department is staffed by emergency medicine physicians who are board-certified in adult and pediatric emergencies and can treat Lake Medina ED First Day of Care any severity of emergency. The emergency department includes 12 private exam rooms, including two resuscitation rooms. The emergency department staff expects to see 11,000 patients in the first year.
