AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 21, 2011 – The new Summa Rehab Hospital is continuing to take form as it nears its last few months of completion. By January 2012, staff, patients, visitors and physicians will enjoy a three-floor inpatient rehabilitation facility featuring several on-site amenities.
Conveniently located on Summa’s Akron City Hospital campus, the free-standing facility will provide patients and visitors with free on-site parking and personalized service in a large open space from the moment they enter. Each patient will have one of 60 private rooms with a bathroom. Four of these rooms have been specifically tailored for bariatric patients.
A 24/7 dedicated staff will focus on providing comfortable, convenient and exceptional patient care, and will be equipped to treat patients with a variety of inpatient rehab needs including those who are recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries and orthopaedic surgeries.
Several types of rehabilitation and therapy sessions will be offered in both private and public settings; including a rehabilitation gym, outdoor therapy area (ambulatory patio), and an apartment-style suite. Other amenities include a pharmacy, imaging suite and a café, to name a few.
“We’re very excited to see our vision of a comprehensive rehab hospital become a reality,” said Cheryl Henthorn, Chief Executive Officer of the Summa Rehab Hospital. “We’re looking forward to opening our doors in a few short months and sharing our expertise and services with patients and their families from across the community.”
Summa Health System and Vibra Healthcare entered into a joint venture in September 2009 and began construction on the Summa Rehab Hospital in September 2010. Hospital leadership led steel and hard hat tours last week to show the progress being made.
The Summa Rehab Hospital was created with evidence-based design in mind. Patients, visitors and staff will enjoy natural light coming through large windows and materials that reflect nature. Floating ceilings will also provide proper acoustics and sound dampening. The functional layout will keep both the patients and staff flowing efficiently.
Summa Rehab Hospital, a $25 million facility, is expected to open in January 2012 and will include on-site parking and other amenities.
Patients and families will enjoy a day room on both patient floors that includes a dining area, fireplace, TV and kiosk for patient and family education.
A 5,000-square-foot, two-story rehabilitation gym is an open area for targeted activities and private treatment sessions to accommodate all therapy treatment needs.
An outdoor rehab area, called the ambulatory patio, allows patients to practice on different surfaces.
The hospital houses 60 private patient rooms with bathrooms, including four unique bariatric rooms.
