AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 22, 2011 – For the second time, Summa Health System’s surgical weight loss management program has been recognized nationally as a provider of excellence in bariatric surgery.

The center, located at Summa Akron City Hospital, has been named a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence® (BSCOE) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Summa’s Bariatric Care Center has maintained this status since 2007. The BSCOE program is the world's largest center of excellence program for the specialty, with more than 700 surgeons and 400 facilities currently designated. The designation enables patients to distinguish surgeons and facilities providing excellence in bariatric surgery.

Summa’s surgical weight loss management program offers laparoscopic gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional procedures. More than 1,000 surgical weight loss procedures have been performed at Summa’s Bariatric Care Center since it opened in 2004. Additional programs offered through the Bariatric Care Center include medical weight loss management and body sculpting.

“Minimally invasive weight loss surgery has become the most successful treatment for morbid obesity today,” said John Zografakis, MD, FACS, director of Summa’s Bariatric Care Center. “Bariatric surgery has allowed countless patients to reclaim their lives and, in many cases, even cure their diabetes and other obesity related health problems.”

In addition to its surgeons and medical management physician, the Summa Bariatric Care Center includes a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse case manager, a dietician and a financial specialist. All patients considering surgery undergo an extensive evaluation by the multidisciplinary team, and surgery patients can opt to receive follow-up care for the rest of their lives.
