AKRON, Jan. 30, 2012 – With heart disease still the number one killer of women, Summa Cardiovascular Institute and Summa’s Women’s Health Services are hoping to turn the tide with a Go Red for Women community education event in conjunction with the American Heart Association Feb. 9 at Summa Akron City Hospital.
The fun, “ladies only” event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. will include talks by Cardiologist Cynthia Pordon, D.O., and Vivian von Gruenigen, M.D., Medical Director for Summa’s Women’s Health Services. The physicians will share heart healthy tips for women and things that women should be doing right now to improve their quality of life.
Attendees will learn CPR techniques and receive a free, take-home CPR Anywhere Kit™ from the American Heart Association. The CPR Anywhere Kit™ does not confer certification in CPR, but can be passed on through the community to spread awareness of basic techniques.
“We want women who attend the event to learn something they didn’t know about their hearts and gain usable knowledge that they can share with friends and family,” Dr. Pordon said. “It is important to remind women, who are culturally often caregivers for the family, that they need to take care of themselves as well.”
The event will take place in the Idabelle Firestone Auditorium in the Professional Center South Building on 55 Arch Street in Akron. Free parking will be available in the 55 Arch Street parking deck attached to the center.
The event is free, but space is limited, so reservations are required. Call Summa Connections at 888-720-5318 to reserve a seat.
