AKRON, Ohio, May 14, 2012 – Summa Akron City Hospital was recently awarded a $75,000 grant from Intuitive Surgical, Inc., manufacturer of the da Vinci® Surgical System, to fund a one-year gynecologic robotic surgery fellowship for a surgeon who has recently completed his or her residency. The grant is one of five of its kind awarded internationally, and the fellow will begin July 1.
In addition to training in and practicing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery under the guidance of the hospital’s surgical team, the fellow will engage in research and represent Summa at two robotic surgery conferences.
“We are very excited about the new fellowship position created by this grant and how it will allow us to continue attracting top surgical talent to Akron,” said Summa’s Chief of Robotics Thomas J. Mendise, M.D. “In addition to robotic system training for this individual, the grant allows Summa to instill our values of quality patient care and surgical technique in another surgeon.”
The 2012-2013 fellow will be G. Dante Roulette, M.D., who is completing residency training at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh.
Summa Akron City Hospital launches advanced GYN robotic surgery observation program
In other news, Edward M. Ferris, M.D., and Thomas J. Mendise, M.D., recently developed an advanced gynecologic robotic surgery observation program at Summa Akron City Hospital. The program has begun training visiting gynecologic surgeons from across the country who either ask for or need additional training in robotics.
“The program is designed for surgeons to visit and learn tips and techniques that will be helpful in their practice,” said Dr. Mendise. “Our goal is to make their trip worthwhile and help them with the new education they are seeking.”
Surgical assistants, operating room nurses, residents and fellows can also take part in the program. The program also benefits participants by teaching efficient operating room turnovers between cases.
Since 2006, Drs. Ferris and Mendise have performed more than 700 minimally invasive robotic-assisted GYN surgeries with no conversions to open surgery.
Drs. Ferris and Mendise practice with Paragon Health Associates LLC in Akron and routinely train medical residents in the Akron area. Dr. Ferris is Summa’s OB/GYN Residency Director.
