AKRON, Ohio, March 13, 2012– Summa Health System is proud to announce it is one of only 10 health systems in the country this year to receive the Hearst Foundations Aging Initiative Grant Award for its Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship program. The grant helps support hospice and palliative medicine fellowship programs that train physicians in caring for patients and families coping with serious illness and becoming mentors, educators and role models.
Hearst Foundations Aging Initiative awarded a $1.2 million grant to the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) to provide the fellowship funding for three years, beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year. According to the AAHPM website, the goal of the grant program is to support 30 fellows who will be among the next generation of leaders who will integrate palliative care into the training of students and residents as they prepare for careers as internists, family physicians, surgeons and other physician specialists largely responsible for caring for an expanding population of older adults.
“We are honored and excited to receive one of the first AAHPM Hearst Foundations Fellowship grants,” said Steven M. Radwany, MD, medical director of Palliative Care and Hospice Services and program director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Summa Health System. “This award reflects the dedication of our entire team to continuing education and advancement and, in particular, to our thriving fellowship program.”
The $37,750 grant will be used to partially support a fellowship position for the 2012-2013 academic year. Summa Health System’s Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship began in 2006 and was in the first group of hospice and palliative medicine fellowship programs to receive accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The one-year program prepares fellows to provide evidence-based interdisciplinary care to the full spectrum of patients with advanced illness. The program accepts three fellows each year.
