AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 22, 2012 – The Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Oral Health Section recently honored Summa Health System’s Center for Dental Health with the Safety Net Dental Care Award, aimed to reduce disparities in access to dental care.
This $75,000 monetary grant will provide a dental care safety net in order to serve members of the community and their families who are unable to afford private dental care.
The grant specifically provides funding for comprehensive diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic dental services for one year.
“We are extremely grateful to receive continued support from the Ohio Department of Health,” said Marvin Cohen, D.D.S., director of the Summa Center for Dental Health. “This grant helps extend our mission to provide the highest quality, compassionate care to our patients and to contribute to a healthier community.”
This is the fourth year Summa’s Center for Dental Health has received the Safety Net Dental Care Award. The grant is partially funded by the Department of Health and Human Services with $39,922.50 in federal funds, which is 3% of the budget for the safety net dental care program in Summa’s Center for Dental Health.
Additionally, Summa’s Center for Dental Health recently received approval from the Summa Board of Trustees and the American Dental Association to expand its Center for Dental Health to include six additional treatment rooms and three additional dental residents. Dental residents are graduate dentists seeking advanced dental training in a hospital setting. The 5,000-square-foot expanded facility, expected to be completed July 1, will include a total of 12 examination rooms and seven dental residents. Six attending dentists, three dental specialists and 13 support staff are also on staff at the center.
