AKRON, Ohio, Mar. 13, 2013 – Summa Health System today announced the appointment of Erik Steele, D.O. as chief medical officer. Dr. Steele will be responsible for providing system- wide strategic direction and oversight of clinical quality, patient safety, performance improvement initiatives and care management.
Dr. Steele comes to Summa from Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, where he served as chief medical officer, chief administrative officer and senior vice president of a seven hospital, 30 company organization. At Summa, he will serve as a member of the senior leadership team.

At Summa, his specific responsibilities include continuing to advance physician alignment, leading and guiding the transition of service lines to integrated institute models that promote system-wide standards of care and improving access and coordination of care.
Dr. Steele received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and his D.O. degree from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship at University of Medicine and Dentistry, Kennedy Memorial Hospital, Stratford, New Jersey, and his residency at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine, where he was chief resident in his 3rd year.
Dr. Steele and his wife, Nan, will relocate to the Akron area in the near future. His first day with Summa is June 24.
