Summa Health System to Host 13th Annual Men Who Cook Fundraiser

Date: 04.10.2013
Contact: Erica Rosenthal Phone: (330) 375-3052

Summa Health System will host its 13th annual Men Who Cook fundraising event that showcases the talent of local amateur chefs – everyone from Summa physicians to business leaders to policemen to athletic coaches and more. The chefs will be cooking up some of their best dishes for event attendees and for an esteemed panel of female judges at the Hollywood-themed event, who are all prominent members of the greater Akron community.

For more information or to purchase tickets, call (800) 237-8662. Visit for a list of participating chefs and judges. Tickets are $60 per person, which includes admission, one ballot to vote for the People’s Choice Award, one raffle ticket and access to the event recipe book. The $150 Patron Level includes admission, two ballots for the People’s Choice Award, one raffle ticket, access to the recipe book, and listing as a Patron Level sponsor.

Men Who Cook will benefit Summa Health System’s Summa Screens program, which provides free cancer screenings, including mammograms and prostate cancer education, for uninsured and underinsured individuals in the community.

Mammograms detect 80-90 percent of breast cancers in women with no symptoms but unfortunately, not everyone can afford an annual screening mammography. Approximately 226,870 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 but if detected early, there is up to a 93 percent five-year survival rate. The American Cancer Society recommends women be screened for breast cancer beginning at age 40.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States after lung cancer. Approximately 241,740 men were affected by prostate cancer in 2012, resulting in 28,170 deaths. The American Urologic Association supports the PSA test which provides important information on the diagnosis, risk assessment and monitoring of prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that men discuss whether to be screened for prostate cancer with their healthcare provider.
