Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Celebrates Achievements

AKRON, Ohio, October 25, 2011Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital hosted a celebration in honor of several achievements related to its vision for the future.  The vision was announced in 2010 after comprehensive research into the healthcare needs of patients in Wadsworth, Rittman and the surrounding communities, and detailed how the hospital would grow and evolve to meet those needs.

“Each step we take towards achieving our vision for the future is a renewed promise of our commitment to the communities we serve,” said Tom DeBord, president of Summa Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman Hospitals.  “We will continue to provide the care they need and the caring they want long into the future.”

Nearly 100 guests attended the celebration to tour the new areas and celebrate the hospital’s achievements.  Speakers at the celebration included:

  • Dr. Michael Bianco, chief of staff for Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital
  • Dr. Patrick Campbell, chief of surgery for Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital
  • Tom DeBord, president of Summa Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman Hospitals
  • Robin Laubaugh, Mayor of Wadsworth
  • Bill Robertson, Mayor of Rittman
  • Dr. Greg Smith, medical director of emergency services for Summa Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital
  • Vicki Sussman, chair of the Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Board of Directors

Since the announcement of its vision for the future, Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital has achieved several of its goals, including the 2010 opening of a new, larger intensive care unit. 2011 achievements include:

Sleep Center
The new Sleep Center is located on the 4th floor of Founders Hall and has four private rooms, each equipped with its own bathroom.

James and Linda Venner Emergency Center
The expanded and renovated emergency department is named for James and Linda Venner, benefactors who gave a landmark gift of $500,000 for the expansion of emergency services at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.  Completed in August 2011, the project increased capacity from 12 to 20 beds and the department’s square footage from 9,300 to 16,000.

The expanded department also includes the Summa Center for Corporate Health.  This provides added convenience for occupational health clients who can now access services at one entry point, regardless of when they need care.  It also provides extra space for the emergency department, which can use the corporate health treatment area in the evenings and on weekends, as needed.

Surgical Services
Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital has completed the expansion of its surgical services department with the addition of three new, larger surgical suites to accommodate the orthopedic, neurologic and other advanced surgeries we provide, including minimally invasive surgery, all using the latest technology.  Other surgical specialties provided include ear/nose/throat, ophthalmology, plastic, podiatric, urological, gynecological, vascular and general surgery.

Medical Specialists
The medical specialists who have joined the Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital medical staff as a part of our vision for the future include:
