The public is encouraged to visit the METRO Transit Center for free confidential HIV screenings and counseling, sponsored by Summa Akron City Hospital, Akron Department of Health, Violet’s Cupboard, Community AIDS Network, Native American Indian and Veterans Center, Inc.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approximates that more than one million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, but 21 percent of them – more than 230,000 Americans – do not know they are infected. Reinforcing the importance of early detection and treatment, the CDC updated its guidelines in 2006 to include HIV testing as part of every individual’s routine healthcare. Globally, there are an estimated 33 million people were living with HIV.
HIV counseling and testing allows those who test negative to learn the information they need to stay uninfected, and helps people with HIV to take the appropriate steps to protect their own health and that of their partners.
