AKRON, Ohio, September 21, 2011– Summa Barberton Hospital broke ground for the construction of its new emergency department on Wednesday, September 21st. Construction will begin immediately and the anticipated completion date of the project is March 2013.
“This is a great day for Summa Barberton Hospital and the residents of Barberton and the surrounding communities,” said Tom DeBord, president of Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, “In addition to our outstanding staff, our patients will have an outstanding new facility for their care.”
Summa Barberton Hospital’s emergency department volume has grown an average of 7.6% in each of the last 5 years, culminating in 2010 with 44,000 patients being treated in an ED that was designed to treat 27,000 patients per year. Consequently, as a part of an overall system initiative to grow emergency services throughout the region, the construction of a new, larger emergency department on the Summa Barberton Hospital campus was approved. The project cost is estimated at $17.3 million.
The new ED will increase the number of beds from 18 to 32, maintain the 10-bed “fast track” treatment area and will triple the square footage of the existing facility. The new ED will have private rooms, a larger waiting area for families, additional parking, a dedicated general radiology unit, dedicated triage space, and a separate entrance for EMS and police. The project also includes a new cafeteria, dining area and conference center, existing areas which must be relocated due to the ED expansion.
Speakers at the groundbreaking event were: Dr. Michael Frank, the chairman of the Summa Barberton Hospital board of directors; Jim McIlvaine, chairman of the Summa Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital LLC board of directors; Bob Harrigan, president of Summa Hospitals; Dr. Greg Smith, medical director of emergency services at Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital; Tom DeBord, president of Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital and Barberton Mayor Bob Genet.
