Installers raise the 36,000-pound Hitachi Oasis open MRI into the ground floor window of the imaging suite at the Summa Health Center at White Pond in Akron.

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 16, 2011 – Summa Health System recently installed the first Hitachi Oasis open MRI system in Cuyahoga and Summit counties. Located at the Summa Health Center at White Pond in Akron, the 36,000-pound system provides a comfortable patient experience with powerful MRI technology to make imaging procedures as quick and smooth as possible.

An MRI is a magnet that produces images of a person’s anatomy without the use of radiation as with other imaging modalities, such as an X-ray. The Hitachi Oasis is an MRI system that is open on all four sides, allowing patients to see the room around them, which helps reduce anxiety and claustrophobia. Additionally, the exam table’s wide design and 660-pound weight limit is accommodating so patients can be moved easily and placed in more relaxed positions in order to scan effectively.

“I am very pleased to bring a new, high-tech open MRI to our White Pond facility,” said Daniel Finelli, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology at Summa Health System. “By offering one of the top options for patients who may require additional space due to weight, injury or claustrophobia, we can provide better imaging quality, respond to a patient’s needs and contribute to their overall satisfaction.”

The Oasis is equipped with circular coils that wrap around a specific body part to provide advanced imaging and comfort for those with wrist, elbow or back pain, for example. Patients with neurological problems can also be examined quickly without being repositioned due to multi-plane imaging technology.

“We are very excited about our relationship with Summa Health System and are pleased to see an installation in a facility dedicated to excellence,” said Sheldon Schaffer, vice president and general manager of MRI & CT at Hitachi.

The Oasis open MRI will be available for patients beginning November 30, and is located at the Summa Health Center at White Pond, One Park West Blvd. in Akron. Patients must be referred by their physician. Physician offices may call Summa’s Central Scheduling Department to make an appointment at (330) 996-8881 or toll free at 1(877) 996-8881.

If interested in seeing and/or photographing the Oasis open MRI, please contact Erica Rosenthal at Summa Health System to make an appointment on Nov. 21 or Nov. 22.
