AKRON, Ohio, Aug. 16, 2011– Summa Health System is proud to announce Cynthia Struk RN, PhD, PNP, MSN has been named president of its Home Care, Hospice and Palliative Care Services.
With more than 20 years of home health experience, Struk brings a breadth of experience in clinical quality and operational leadership with a focus on fiscal accountability and quality healthcare. She also served as their associate chief of clinical services, vice president of performance improvement and research, corporate director of clinical development and informatics, and director of managed care and specialty services. She also has been actively involved in state and national organizations advocating for home care services.
“We are very excited to welcome Cynthia to the Summa family and to our post acute and senior services,” said Summa Health System Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Lanie Ward. “With her vast experience and leadership, we can even better serve the home care, hospice and palliative care needs of our community.”
Summa also recently announced Kimberly Goodson, RN, BSN, LNC as the new director of of Summa Home Care located at Summa St. Thomas Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Home Care located at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. Reporting to Struk, Goodson brings more than 15 years of home health experience and nine years as a director. For the past several months, Goodson has served as the interim director for both home care agencies and before that was the director of Home Care for Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.
Summa’s Home Care helps patients following hospitalization or those in the community who need nursing, rehabilitation or home care aide services. The staff serves as the coordinator of care for the patient ensuring that the goals of both the physician and patient are met. Services are delivered in the patient’s home or assisted living facility, which research has supported as an environment for improving health outcomes.
Summa’s Hospice offers care to patients at the end of life. The program focuses on providing medical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families. Hospice services can be provided in the patient’s home, assisted living facility or nursing home enabling families to remain together where they are most comfortable.
Offering a team approach to caring for patients and their families with advanced illness, Palliative Care at Summa is an important part of its comprehensive services. Not limited to patients at the end of life, palliative care focuses on relieving suffering and improving quality of life while the patient is receiving other appropriate treatments for their illness. Services can be offered in any setting where the patient is receiving care.
In 2010, Summa Health System announced its plan to integrate Summa’s home care and hospice agencies – Hospice of Summa, Summa Home Care, Robinson Visiting Nurse and Hospice, and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Home Care.
“With Cynthia’s leadership and our plan for integration, there is great opportunity to build upon and improve the quality services already provided to the community,” added Ward. “This is especially important as we believe there will be an increase for home care and hospice services in the future due to an aging population and healthcare reform initiatives.”
