MEDINA, Ohio, Jan. 10, 2011 – Ground is being cleared beginning next week for construction of a 24-hour Emergency Department and new physician offices at the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina on Medina Road.
The $7.86 million project will add 20,000 square feet to the health center that Akron-based Summa Health System opened last fall on its campus in Montville and Medina Townships. The new wing is scheduled to begin serving patients in November, and Summa expects to provide emergency care to approximately 11,000 patients in the first year.
"We know there is a demand for increased access to Emergency Services in Medina due to the county's growing and aging population," said Unhee Kim, Summa's vice president of service lines and ancillary services. "And we're pleased to add this service along with space for physician offices to our existing continuum of healthcare services in Medina. Our goal is to provide the right care at the right time in the right place for our patients."
The Emergency Department will be staffed by board certified emergency medicine physicians trained for both adult and pediatric emergencies.
Summa is known for providing convenient local access points across a broad geography in Northeast Ohio, including primary care and other physician offices, ambulatory centers, urgent care centers, emergency rooms and community hospitals.
The Summa Health Center at Lake Medina opened to patients in November and currently offers: radiation and infusion oncology services, The Medina Surgery Center, a sleep medicine lab, physical and occupational therapy, imaging and lab services. Physician offices are available in family medicine, OB/GYN, general surgery, medical and radiation oncology, and pain management.
In addition to physician offices, the expansion will include a community room for use by the health center and groups that wish to reserve it.
More than 40 jobs have been created thus far as a result of the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina, and at least 40 more jobs will be created with the addition of the Emergency Department.
