AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 23, 2011– As the books closed on 2010, the Summa Foundation celebrated a record year with more than $9 million in donations.
This success was due in part to the re-tooling of the Foundation’s development program to focus beyond annual giving and more heavily on principal giving, which is defined as gifts that are out-of-the-ordinary both in routine and size. These efforts culminated in three $1 million gifts, creating an endowed chair in women’s health, an orthopaedic fellowship and an imaging research fund.
“Through the generosity of our donors, we are proud to assist in the growth and development of the medical education and research programs here and attract new talent to Summa Health System,” said Kathy Taylor, executive director of development for the Summa Foundation. “Last year’s fundraising record is especially notable during these difficult economic times but as we see the economy continuing to improve, we are fortunate that charitable giving is following suit.”
As an integral part of both Summa Health System and the broader philanthropic community, the Summa Foundation works to advance transformational philanthropy, community understanding and goodwill for Summa’s programs and priorities and effect positive change in the community. Through its efforts, the Foundation is well-positioned to shape and lead the aggregate of the community, corporations, governments and private donors to support and grow the important work of a health system renowned for excellence in patient care and healthcare delivery.
“Every donation is important to us – from $1 to $1 million – and we look forward to another successful year in 2011,” added Taylor.
