AKRON, Ohio, July 19, 2011– Summa Health System has been ranked high-performing in nine specialties in the Akron metro area in U.S. News Media & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings.
Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals, which were ranked No. 1 in the Akron metro area, were high-performing in cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, orthopaedics, pulmonology and urology. Summa Western Reserve Hospital was recognized in ear, nose and throat and was ranked No. 3 in the Akron metro area.

As part of its Best Hospitals rankings, U.S. News now evaluates hospitals by metropolitan area, which was expanded for 2011-12 to include 94 metro areas. These high-performing hospitals are in locations with at least half a million residents and meet standards for strong performance in one or more of the 16 Best Hospitals specialties. The latest rankings showcase 720 hospitals out of about 5,000 hospitals nationwide and will be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will go on sale August 30.
