AKRON, Ohio, Oct. 11, 2012 – Summa Barberton and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospitals appointed Joseph P. Myers, M.D., as Vice President of Medical Affairs, effective Jan. 2, 2013. Dr. Myers, chair of the Department of Medicine at Summa Akron City Hospital and a physician with Summa Physicians Inc. – Infectious Disease, will bring more than 30 years of medical expertise and leadership to Summa Barberton and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospitals.
In his role as Vice President of Medical Affairs, Dr. Myers will be a key member of the hospitals’ senior leadership team and will oversee all medical affairs administrative functions, quality of care in collaboration with the hospitals’ chief nursing officer, and help Summa Health System strategically achieve its goals around quality, patient safety and redesigning the clinical enterprise.

Currently Dr. Myers is the chair of the Department of Medicine, chair of the Department Chairs Committee and a member of the Medical Cabinet at Summa Akron City Hospital. He is also a member of the Summa Health System Board of Directors, sitting on the System Quality Committee, and recently completed a three-year term on the Summa Akron City Hospital Board of Directors. He is a member of numerous other committees and is a qualified physician safety trainer for Summa Health System’s I’m 4 Safety Program. Dr. Myers is also active with Northeast Ohio Medical University and the American College of Physicians where he sits on the Ohio Chapter’s Governors Council.
Dr. Myers attended The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus and his fellowship in Infectious Disease at The University of Cincinnati Hospitals. He is married to his wife, Gwendolyn, and has three children.
