BARBERTON, Ohio, Nov. 7, 2012 – Summa Barberton Hospital recognized several outstanding individuals as Employees of the Month throughout the summer and fall for service to the hospital and dedication to patient care.
Gayla Hathaway was named May’s Employee of the Month at Summa Barberton Hospital where she has been employed for 21 and a half years working in the Nutrition Services Department. Hathaway is currently a full-time cashier and says she enjoys talking to the people she meets every day at work.
Hathaway graduated from Barberton High School and currently resides in Barberton. Hathaway enjoys spending time with her children Tammy, Ronnie, Cathy and Bobbie. She is the proud grandmother of Sarah, Ronnie, Leah, Matthew, Camryn, Kacey and Kellen.
Hathaway’s interests include Bingo, retiring next year, and sitting on the deck of her new condo.
Jesse Mattes was named June’s Employee of the Month at Summa Barberton Hospital where he has worked full-time for eight years. Mattes works in the Patient Registration department as a Patient Registration Coordinator. Mattes says he likes the opportunity for career advancement at the hospital.
Mattes resides in Akron but was born in Tampa, Fla. Some of his interests include playing the guitar and working out.
Erin Hohman was named July’s Employee of the Month at Summa Barberton Hospital. Homan obtained her bachelor’s degree from Marietta College and is currently a Human Resources Representative with the hospital where she has worked for more than 11 years.
Homan is a part of local and national hospital recruiters groups (NEOAHCR & NAHCR). Hohman says she enjoys the friendly staff and the family-like environment at the hospital.
Homan was born in North Canton and currently lives in Copley with her husband, Todd, her daughter, Riley, and her son, Trent.
One of Erin’s main interests is traveling. She has taken five cruises and is planning more in the future.
Beverly Woodford, a full-time surgical assistant at Summa Barberton Hospital, was named the hospital’s August Employee of the Month. Woodford has worked previously in the Environmental Services and Central Supply/Sterile Processing Departments at the hospital.
Woodford holds an associate degree and said the things she finds most interesting about her job are assisting with wound care and c-sections at the hospital.
Woodford was born in Akron and grew up in the Portage Lakes, graduating from Coventry High School. She currently lives in Barberton and has four children: Robert, Ryan, Pamela and Patricia.
Woodford enjoys playing video games, watching the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team, remodeling and traveling.
Pharmacist Linda Smith was named Summa Barberton Hospital’s September Employee of the Month where she has devoted more than 31 years of service.
Smith is a member of the hospital’s QCPR Project Team. Smith says that she loves working in a community hospital that provides all of the patient care services available at Summa Barberton Hospital because it allows for a small hospital feel but a challenging clinical setting.
Smith is from Steubenville and now lives in Jackson Township. She has three sons and three grandsons. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family as well as reading, watching movies and decorating.
Infusion Nurse Tiffany Kurtz, R.N., of the Parkview Center at Summa Barberton Hospital, was named October Employee of the Month. She has devoted nearly 10 years of service to the hospital where she was also born.
Kurtz previously worked as a nurse extern and currently serves as a preceptor helping teach students and new staff. She is a member of the Nurse Practice Council and Chair of the System Oncology Nursing Policy Committee. She also helps create the quarterly Oncology Nursing Competencies.
She is a graduate of Barberton High School and Kent State University and recently earned her oncology certification.
Kurtz says she adores her fellow Parkview Center co-workers, managers and patients.
Kurtz is involved in youth ministry and also serves as a Sunday school teacher at the Apostolic Church of Barberton. Kurtz is married to husband David and has a young son and daughter.
Unit Secretary Sandra Schmidt was named Summa Barberton Hospital’s November Employee of the Month. She has worked at the hospital for 12 years and is currently fulltime on first shift in the Nursing Float area.
Schmidt still lives in her hometown of Barberton and is a graduate of Barberton High School and Stark State College.
Schmidt says she enjoys the opportunity to meet and help new people each day and says she gets to work with some of the finest doctors and nurses in the area. Her hobbies include traveling, gardening, photography, hiking and working out.
