AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 5, 2012 – Summa Health System has appointed two new physician leaders with plans to enhance the way the Akron-based health system delivers cancer care and give local residents new options when fighting cancer.

Radiation Oncologist Susan M. Hong, M.D., has been appointed Summa Health System’s medical director of Radiation Oncology. In addition, Radiation Oncologist Charles Kunos, M.D., Ph.D., has joined Summa and been appointed medical director of Radiation Oncology at Summa Akron City Hospital and director of Brachytherapy/Radiosurgery at Summa Akron City Hospital.

Dr. Hong, a member of Summa Physicians Inc. – Radiation Oncology, has served as medical director of Radiation Oncology at the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina since the center opened in fall 2010. Dr. Hong is a native to northeast Ohio and a graduate of Northeast Ohio Medical University. She completed her postgraduate training at State University of New York in Syracuse. Dr. Hong specializes in breast cancer treatment and also has an interest in the management of lung and prostate cancers.

"This is a tremendous and exciting opportunity for Summa to provide the Akron community with the nation's best cancer care using state-of-the-art technology and a multidisciplinary approach to curative treatment,” Dr. Hong said. “It is a privilege for Summa to have high-quality physicians like Dr. Kunos who is motivated to provide excellent patient care and promote the advancement of cancer research. In collaboration with Vivian von Gruenigen, M.D., medical director of Women's Health Services, Summa will be at the forefront of gynecological and breast cancer care."

In his new role at Summa, Dr. Kunos will also be joining Summa Physicians Inc. – Radiation Oncology and will be bringing to the program a nationally recognized research agenda and an interest in clinical trial development.

"As a partner in cancer care, I am passionate about bringing innovative, comprehensive radiation oncology clinical trials to patients in the Akron community,” Dr. Kunos said. “With these exciting opportunities, our radiation oncology team will be working seamlessly with the other oncology specialists at Summa cancer centers to provide our patients with whole-person healing and care."

Dr. Kunos has been widely published in the area of radiation oncology as a complementary or stand-alone treatment for gynecologic cancers including cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer. His expertise in stereotactic radiosurgery involves treating cancer with high-powered X-rays that precisely target tumors while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. At Summa Akron City Hospital, patients have access to this technique with the Novalis® platform by Brainlab, which can be used to treat brain tumors and malignancies in other parts of the body.

Dr. Kunos received dual bachelor’s degrees, a master’s, a medical doctorate and doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He joins Summa from University Hospitals of Cleveland where he served as director of gynecologic, pediatric and musculoskeletal radiation.
