BOSTON – May 8, 2012 – The World Congress Leadership Summit on the Business of Women’s Health is pleased to announce Vivian von Gruenigen, MD of Summa Health System is the recipient of the 1st Annual Richard Ireland Award for Excellence and Innovation. The prestigious award was presented at last month’s 3rd annual summit in Boston.
Dr. von Gruenigen serves as department chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Summa’s Akron City and St. Thomas hospitals and as medical director of Women’s Health Services for the Ohio-based system. She joined Summa in 2009 and is responsible for allocating funds for ongoing efforts, such as faculty development, research and education growth.
Named for the late Richard Ireland, a longtime proponent of women’s health issues and founder of The Snowmass Institute, the award recognizes an individual that has advanced the business of women's health services in their community, network or nation-wide. Nominees must be an individual actively working within a women's service line who has advanced women's health in their community, network or in the United States in the field of technology innovation, program development, research, access to care or the reduction of disparities.
For eight years prior to her current post at Summa, Dr. von Gruenigen served in the gynecologic oncology division of the department of OB/GYN at University Hospitals’ MacDonald Women’s Hospital. She also served as director of robotic surgery at UH and as associate professor for the Department of Reproductive Biology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Recently, she was an Athena finalist for the Akron Cleveland Athena International Leadership Award, received the Outstanding Alumni award from Wright State University, and is featured in the Cleveland Magazine’s “Best Doctors in America” segment.
Dr. von Gruenigen is an active board member for the Genyecological Cancer Foundation, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Foundation and Summa Health System accountable care organization.
