AKRON, Ohio, March 3, 2012– The Women’s Board of Summa Health System celebrated its 90th anniversary this year at an annual joint meeting of the Women’s Boards serving Summa Health System. At the Feb. 28 meeting, the Women’s Board of Summa Health System, the Women’s Board at Summa St. Thomas Hospital and the Auxiliary of Robinson Memorial Hospital also shared their many successes in 2011 and had the opportunity to listen to special guest speakers, Don Drumm along with wife Lisa and daughter Leandra.
“This is always a great day to reflect on the tireless work of the many women who volunteer their time at Summa Health System to make a difference,” said Summa Health System President & CEO Thomas J. Strauss as he addressed the crowd. “And that difference truly is about our patients – from the gifts shops you run; to the lobbies, labs and recovery rooms you staff; and the flowers, test results and supplies you deliver. Every day that you ladies walk through our doors, you make a difference in the lives of our patients.”
For the past 90 years, the Women’s Board of Summa Health System has been enriching patient experience at Summa Akron City Hospital. In addition to the Plant Place and Gift Shop, which are their biggest sources of income, they also hold fundraisers such as a tulip sale, which enabled them to purchase 60 camisoles for breast cancer patients. They’ve also raised money to provide 100 mammograms for women who would otherwise be unable to afford the important cancer screening. Additionally, they are in their fourth year of a five-year pledge to provide $88,000 annually to the Jean and Milton Cooper Cancer Center. The board also holds the hospital’s annual Nurse Preceptor Award and provides nursing scholarships.
At every annual meeting, a special guest speaker is welcomed to share their unique experiences. This year, the Women’s Boards were honored to host beloved local artist Don, Lisa and Leandra Drumm. Don and Leandra showed and talked about their work – and the stories behind them – as displayed around Akron, across the country and throughout the world. The Drumm family later joined the Women’s Boards for lunch and conversation.
