AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 6, 2013 – After rigorous reviews from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), Summa Barberton Hospital and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital have both been designated as accredited Chest Pain Centers (CPC). To the community at large, this designation means that both hospitals have the equipment and expertise to quickly and effectively treat heart attack victims. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans have a type of heart attack known as a ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in which blood flow is completely blocked to a portion of the heart. Unless the blockage is eliminated quickly, the patient’s health and life are at serious risk and every minute of delay means more heart muscle is being damaged.
Summa Barberton and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman join Summa Akron City Hospital, which recently was reaccredited as a “Chest Pain Center with PCI.” PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) is a mechanical means of treating heart attack patients by eliminating blockages in coronary arteries.
“I want to thank everyone involved in this effort – from emergency department and cath lab staff to physicians, nurses, EMS personnel and administrators,” said Thomas DeBord, president of Summa Barberton and Summa Wadsworth-Rittman hospitals. “By working together as a team, we can shave precious minutes off of the time it takes for a patient to reach the hospital to when they can be treated by a physician, which allows us to save more lives.”
SCPC is an international not-for-profit organization committed to leading the fight to eliminate heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide by improving systems of care for heart patients through eliminating obstacles that keep patients from receiving appropriate treatment. SCPC accreditation programs meet this goal by recognizing centers that meet or exceed quality of care measures for people experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.
