AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 13, 2013 – Starting Valentine’s Day, when you deliver a baby at any Summa Health System birthing hospital, you’ll be offered a private room for postpartum care. This follows the completion of renovations on the 3 North mother/baby unit at Summa Akron City Hospital, where 18 rooms were expanded and redecorated to include new beds and furnishings, flat screen TVs, full bathrooms, hardwood floors and a nature-oriented color palette. Summa hospitals have offered private labor and delivery rooms for years.

“The birth of a child is one of the most significant days in a mother or father’s life,” said Vivian E. von Gruenigen, M.D., Summa’s system medical director of Women’s Health Services. “We wanted to enhance that experience with maternity rooms that would be as relaxing and soothing as possible and conducive to the family bonding that occurs.”

Approximately 3,000 babies are born annually at Summa Akron City Hospital, which has been recognized multiple times for safety and quality, including being one of 90 hospitals nationally to participate in the Best Fed Beginnings project and pursue Baby-Friendly Hospital designation; being one of two hospitals in the state to receive the 2012 Ohio Perinatal Safety Institute Best Practice Award from the Ohio Hospital Association; and being twice mentioned in the Wall St. Journal for its program to reduce c-sections and improve childbirth safety. Summa’s Women’s Health Research program also contributes globally to the field of obstetrics with multiple academic publications and presentations each year.

Summa offers midwifery services, low-risk birthing options, birthing balls, tub rooms for hydrotherapy and breast feeding support. Care is designed so that infants stay in their mother’s room unless there is a medical need for nursery care.
