AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 27, 2013 – Summa Health System today announced the appointment of Thomas Malone, M.D., MBA, to the position of president, Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals. He begins in his new post in mid-October. Dr. Malone replaces long-time president Bob Harrigan who is retiring from Summa Health System on October 1.
Prior to joining Summa Health System, Dr. Malone served as president and chief executive officer of Harper University & Hutzel Women’s Hospital, a 560-bed academic medical center affiliated with Wayne State University. Before serving as president and CEO, he was executive vice president and chief medical officer, at which time he was responsible for graduate medical education, physician contracting, medical informatics and corporate quality and safety.
Throughout his career, he served in a variety of leadership positions, including president and chief executive officer of Children’s Choice of Michigan, a mission-driven managed healthcare system for children with special needs, and president and chief executive officer of Physician Directed Care, a physician organization that provided contracting and medical management services.

Dr. Malone received his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University and his medical degree from The Ohio State University. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Columbus Children’s Hospital and his perinatal-neonatal fellowship at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana.
Dr. Malone is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the National Board of Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. In addition, he is the recipient of the distinguished teacher award from Methodist Hospital of Indiana.
Dr. Malone, a native of Niles, Ohio, will relocate to northeast Ohio with his wife, Megan. He has two children, Joseph and Sarah, both working in Chicago.
