NAPLES, Fla., Sept. 10, 2013 – Primary care physicians and other healthcare providers seeking the latest continuing education in infectious disease will have an opportunity to earn 12.5 continuing medical education credits during a three-day Florida seminar offered through the nationally renowned infectious disease program at Summa Health System headquartered in Akron, Ohio. The 31st annual Infectious Disease Seminar for the Primary Care Provider will be held Dec. 6-8, 2013, at the Edgewater Beach Hotel, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel, in Naples, Fla.
“New issues arise relating to infectious disease each year,” said Thomas File, M.D., president of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and chair of the Infectious Disease Division at Summa Health System. “It is important for primary care providers and other healthcare professionals to be informed on emerging infections, new recommendations and other topics and issues relating to infectious disease in order to provide the best patient care.”
The seminar will focus on new developments of antimicrobial therapy, pediatric and adult vaccines, MRSA infections and different infectious disease syndromes such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, C difficile infection, infections in patients on TNF inhibitors, and HIV. A session will also be presented on emerging infectious diseases.
After the seminar, attendees should be able to review updates on important topics in infectious disease that affect children and adults, discuss the most current prevention and treatment guidelines from the IDSA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), explain the importance of the careful use of antimicrobials, understand the role primary care providers play in reaching optimal immunization rates, and explore strategies to enhance communication with patients and families around prevention and treatment of infectious disease.
