AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 18, 2013 – The Joint Commission recently granted Summa Health System with its Advanced Certification in Palliative Care. This highest level of achievement, according to the Joint Commission, “recognizes hospital inpatient programs that demonstrate exceptional patient and family-centered care and optimize the quality of life for patients with serious illness.”
Summa’s program is the only one in Ohio and one of just 47 across the country to earn this recognition from The Joint Commission.
“We work very hard to address our patients’ physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs,” said Cynthia Struk, MSN, RN, PhD, Summa’s president of Home Care and Hospice. “Our consistent goal is to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families.”
Steven “Skip” Radwany, MD, Summa’s medical director for Hospice and Palliative Care Services, added, “It is our unique team approach that allows patients and families to meet their goals for care.”
Palliative care is for people of any age at any stage in a serious illness. Illnesses may be curable, chronic or life-threatening and include diseases and conditions such as cancer, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other complex medical conditions. Care at Summa is provided by a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and other providers who work cohesively with the patient’s own personal physicians.
