AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 26, 2013 – Summa Health System recently earned a three-year accreditation for its radiation therapy services at its cancer centers in Akron, Barberton and Medina as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Summa is the only cancer care provider in Akron or Canton to receive accreditation, which also places it among a select group of cancer care providers nationwide.
“We’ve seen rapid advancements over the last 10 years in the field of radiation therapy making treatments more powerful and effective and at the same time also less invasive for the patient,” said Susan Hong, M.D., medical director of Summa’s radiation oncology program and a member of Summa Physicians Inc. – Radiation Oncology. “It is a tremendous accomplishment for Summa’s radiation services to be recognized by the ACR, a prestigious national accreditation board, as providing the highest standard of radiation therapy to our patients. We are very pleased to be recognized as providing a wide range of high quality cancer treatments to the northeast Ohio community and beyond.”
Radiation oncology is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist is a physician who uses radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain. Radiation therapy is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy and surgery. Summa provides radiation oncology services during more than 26,500 outpatient visits a year at Summa Akron City Hospital, Summa Barberton Hospital and the Summa Health Center at Lake Medina.
Summa also offers stereotactic radiosurgery where precise and non-invasive beams are “shaped” to mirror a tumor and delivered with pinpoint accuracy, providing tissue sparing treatment in days instead of weeks.
The ACR is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body. Accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting specific practice guidelines and technical standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed as part of the accreditation process.
