AKRON, OH June 27, 2014 – Summa Health System announced today that the inpatient services at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital will close effective July 13, 2014. The health system will operate an integrated medical campus – Summa Health Center at Wadsworth-Rittman – at the site of the Wadsworth hospital featuring a freestanding emergency department with an observation unit and expanded primary care offices. The changes are being made to both strengthen the health system today while transforming the organization for tomorrow.
Inpatient services at Summa Wadsworth-Rittman have been averaging fewer than 20 patients a day. This downward trend is not unique to Wadsworth-Rittman; in fact, inpatient volumes are dropping at hospitals across the country as continued advances in medical procedures, technology and pharmaceuticals make outpatient procedures more and more preferable.
Additional services that will be offered at the Summa Health Center at Wadsworth-Rittman include:
- Diagnostics Imaging
- Emergency Medicine
- General Medical Services
- General Surgical Services
- Geriatric Medicine (Center for Senior Health)
- Infusion Services (Outpatient)
- Orthopaedic Services
- Pain Management
- Plastic Surgery
- Primary Care Services
- Pulmonary Care
- Rehabilitation Services
- Sports Medicine
- Vascular Surgery
“Summa remains committed to serving the Wadsworth community,” said Dr. Tom Malone, Summa Health System chief operating officer. “Together with our physicians, staff and community leaders, we will keep Wadsworth healthy.”
