Dr. Logue is the Director of the Department of Family Medicine Research Center at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Logue came to Summa Health System from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio, where he was Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Division of Community Health Sciences, from 1985 to 1993. He was the Scientific Director of the Family Practice Clinical Research Center from 1993 to 2001, and then became the Director of the Family Medicine Research Center in 2001. He received his MSPH in Epidemiology in 1977 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Epidemiology in 1982 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2008 he obtained certification in Public Health under the new program sponsored by the National Board of Public Health Examiners for individuals with prior professional (MPH or MSPH) degrees.

Dr. Logue’s national scientific reputation with respect to health disparities is based on prior training, research, and experience serving on multiple NIH review panels.

Dr. Smucker graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1978, and completed his family practice residency at Summa Health System in 1981. Dr. Smucker currently serves as an Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, Summa Health System, where his primary care practice resides as well as teaching faculty for the FM residency program. Since 1982, he has served as medical director and primary care physician for 145 patients at the Altenheim Nursing Home in Strongsville, Ohio.

In 1987 he joined the faculty of the Family Medicine Residency at Summa as the Director of Research. He is a Certified Medical Director, holds the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics and Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He is Professor of Family Medicine at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

Edward Demond Scott, MD, MPH, CPH

Dr. Scott is a Research Associate of the Family Medicine Research Center. He is Director of the developing Center for Health Disparities Solutions. His research interests include community-oriented approaches to address chronic disease-related health disparities. Dr. Scott graduated from medical school at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio then joined the Family Medicine Center to complete his internship and residency from 2001 to 2004. Dr. Scott completed a clinical research fellowship at Summa Health System and obtained his MPH at the University of Pittsburgh in 2008. He has board certifications in Family Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Scott is currently project director for Summa Health System’s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program entitled “Tools for Wellness”, and leads a team of researchers and public health professionals exploring development of a Center for Minority Health & Health Disparities Solutions.

Trisha Dudley is the Research Technician of the Department of Family Medicine Research Center. Trisha came to Summa Health System from the Surgery Center of Akron in 1992. She worked in Radiology for two years and in the Family Medicine Center for fifteen years.  She received her BA in Sociology in 2007 and her BA in Psychology in 2009 from the University of Akron. Trisha is responsible for data collection, scanning, and cleaning; performing statistical analyses; EMR/SQL/SAS programming and data retrieval; and data coordination and presentation. Trisha is a member of the Chronic Disease Self Management Master's Training Program at Summa Health System.

Beth Matthews serves as our Research Dietitian in the Department of Family Medicine Research. Ms. Matthews’ primary responsibility is designing and delivering weight management services to primary care patients under research protocols. Beth joined the FMC Research Team in 2008 with previous experience as both a clinical and outpatient dietitian with special interest in diabetes care and adult weight management.  She received her BA in nutrition and dietetics from Kent State University in 2003 and her MS in human nutrition from Kent State University in 2005. Currently Beth participates in pilot studies with the FMC, Summa Health System and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine to learn whether "Better Weight and Better Sleep" advice produces more weight loss than only "Better Weight" advice. Future studies being discussed include the use of current available technologies for weight loss and maintenance and the dietitian's roll in the medical home group concept.
