Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)
You will need to come to the hospital for testing within 30 days prior to the day of your surgery. This appointment should last a little more than an hour. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.

When you arrive, please sign in at the information desk in the reception area of the PAT location. At the time of this appointment, you will need to bring any papers your surgeon gave you, along with your insurance cards, a list of all medications (including non-prescription medications), herbal therapies, allergies to medications and a copy of your completed Advance Directives, if you have one.

At the time of your pre-testing you will:

  • Be registered for the day of surgery and have an opportunity to ask insurance questions;
  • Speak with anesthesia staff;
  • Receive the latest information concerning your instructions before your surgery;
  • Meet with a registered nurse who will discuss your medications and medical history;
  • Recieve a short physical exam if necessary;
  • Receive post surgery education; and
  • Have laboratory testing and cardiogram completed if indicated

*If you are unable to have your surgery or pre-testing on the day scheduled, notify your doctor to be rescheduled.

  • Do not eat anything, including gum or mints, after midnight

When you Arrive
On the day of your surgery, you will be asked to sign papers at the registration desk. A nurse will escort you into the outpatient surgery unit, and you will receive a hospital gown to change into. Your belongings will be secured in a locker. However, we do ask that you leave any valuables at home. Next, a nurse will begin to ask you medical questions, including the location of the surgery site. This question may be asked several times, and the location may be maked with a marking pen. If there are any questions you do not understand, please ask your nurse to explain. Family members are only permitted to visit with you prior to surgery.

Unfortunately, emergencies or cancellations cannot be predicted and can effect your scheduled surgery time. If this happens to you, we ask for your patience. The surgical staff will make every attempt to keep you and your family informed of changes as they occur.

Before surgery, you will be asked to sign a permission paper indicating you have spoken to the surgeon, and the risks and benefits have been explained. At this time, you will also speak with an anesthesiologist concerning the anesthesia to be used for your procedure. An intravenous line (IV) to give fluids and medicine in surgery will be started now. Up to two people may sit with you until you go into surgery. When you are taken to surgery, your visitors may wait in the surgery lounge.

Anesthesia
Your doctor will discuss with you the expected type of anesthesia for your procedure. On the day of your surgery, a member of the Anesthesia Department will explain the types of anesthesia.

If you have a general, regional or local anesthesia with sedation, you must arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you home. For your safety, you will not be allowed to drive or take public transporation alone after a surgery with anesthesia.

If you develop a cold, fever, cough, sore throat or have been exposed to a contagious disease before your scheduled procedure, please notify your physician immediately.
