Research

Many opportunities are available for research. Summa Health System is committed to research as an integral component of its academic and clinical environment. Summa's focus on research has helped set the highest standards for medical care in our community and helped us develop a reputation for excellence in such critical specialties as cardiology, diabetes, emergency services, orthopaedics, oncology, senior health, and renal services. Because everyone benefits from well-executed research, it is in the best interest of all healthcare professionals at Summa Health System to provide a mechanism that encourages participation, produces meaningful results and, above all, ensures patient protection. Research is an essential component of Resident and Fellowship training and helps us attract the finest physicians and allied health professionals. It enhances the graduate medical education program and encourages employees to develop ideas for better healthcare. All research at Summa requires appropriate review and approval of all research projects prior to their implementation or submission to internal grant review or to an outside agency. All research done at Summa must be approved before the study can be initiated.

Fellows can work with the Orthopedic Surgery Research Director to see if there are opportunities to assist on any ongoing musculoskeletal research projects. The Family Medicine Department also has a very active research program through the Family Medicine Clinical Research Center. These facilities, along with the relationship the hospital has with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), the University of Akron and Kent State University, make for a rich environment for scholarly activity.

Fellows are also expected to attend the AMSSM Annual Meeting and present at least a poster or a case presentation.
